
Changes are rippling through the Blue Hill-area food landscape as some new eateries are opening, others are moving to new venues and at least one is shutting down for good.
In Surry, Pugnuts ice cream and gelato shop will close Sunday, Oct. 11, after a decade of operation as its owners, Eric Treworgy and Karl Holmes, retire, according to the Island Advantages newspaper. The business and property on busy Ellsworth Road was listed for sale in recent years for $1.1 million as they prepared for retirement; no active listings appeared online Friday.
Stowaways, a family-style restaurant that operated in downtown Bucksport for the last year, is moving to Main Street in Blue Hill. It plans to reopen in a space formerly occupied by Sandy’s Blue Hill Cafe, which closed last winter, in the next two weeks, according to the Island Advantages newspaper.
Owner Rob DeGennaro previously owned similarly styled, generally short-lived restaurants in Stonington, Castine, Deer Isle and Northeast Harbor, along with establishments in Florida.
Since July, locally owned Blue Hill Deli has sold sandwiches from the former home of a Subway sandwich franchise, which closed earlier this year after its regional franchise owner filed for bankruptcy. The business added pizza on Thursday through Saturday nights starting in late September, according to its Facebook page.
“Good food, good sandwiches,” local owner Ashley Munroe told the Rising Tide online newspaper when the deli opened in June. “This is something for the community.”
Across the peninsula in Brooksville, the Old Post Office opened this summer serving coffee, baked goods and ice cream next to Buck’s Market in the center of Buck’s Harbor. It closed for the season last Sunday, the business posted on social media.
A new place to eat also came to the center of Brooklin this summer in Astro, a takeout focused on hot dogs, fries and ice cream in the former home of the Morning Moon breakfast restaurant. It will close for the season on Saturday, Oct. 10, according to an Instagram post.
