On Saturday, Oct. 4 in Presque Isle, the Ellsworth Eagles boys scored a late goal to force a 1-1 draw with the host Presque Isle Wildcats. In the earlier girls game, a similar defensive battle ended with the Wildcats scoring the only goal for a 1-0 victory over the Eagles.
In the opening girls game, strong defense by both teams in front of goalies Allie Bivens for the Eagles and Kolbie Langley of the Wildcats resulted in few good scoring chances. Presque Isle finally broke through midway through the second half when Astra Laughton intercepted a clearing attempt by the Eagles and lofted a shot over the Ellsworth goalie. That goal proved to be the only one of the contest to give Presque Isle the 1-0 victory. The Wildcats up their record to 6-3, and the Eagles are now 3-6.
Girls game Scoring:
Presque Isle: Astra Laughton 59′
In the boys game, the Eagles and Wildcats again locked up in a defensive battle. Presque Isle got on the board just over seven minutes into the game when Trenton Mastro headed in a corner kick by Brandon Porter. Ellsworth got the equalizer with 11 minutes remaining in the second half when Porter Merrill headed in a long throw-in by Caleb Jordan. The teams played through two scoreless overtimes, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles are now 6-2-2, and the Wildcats are 6-1-2.
