Troy Jackson must build a massive campaign overnight to catch Susan Collins
Less than two weeks ago, Troy Jackson was one of four losers in the tight Democratic gubernatorial primary. Now, suddenly, he’s the party’s new presumptive nominee for U.S. Senate, replacing Graham Platner in the Democrats’ bid to oust Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.
The longtime logger and former Maine Senate president from Allagash is a close match for Platner on policy, which delegates at a short-notice convention seemed to affirm over the weekend, handing him what is likely to be a winning majority ahead of a 600-member convention Saturday.
But Jackson is getting a late start on fundraising in a race where Republicans supporting Collins in her bid for a sixth term have already booked more than twice the value of advertising as Democrats. As a close ally of Platner’s on the campaign trail, Jackson also has seen the hazards of competing in a high-stakes national race but said he’s ready.
“The opportunity to win this seat that’s so important is really daunting,” he said in an interview Sunday. “I don’t want to let people down.”
