A fire that burned a Veazie apartment building Tuesday afternoon was likely started by discarded smoking material.
The fire broke out about 3:02 p.m. at the two-story, 20-unit apartment complex on Thompson Road, according to Lt. Aaron Turcotte of the Maine State Police.
By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread up the rear of the building to the roof, Turcotte said Wednesday morning.
Crews contained the fire to four apartments. Neighboring units saw water and smoke damage, though.
A man was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was treated for second-degree burns to his feet. More than a dozen firefighters were treated for heat-related illnesses.
One dog, and possibly a cat, died in the fire.
The Red Cross is assisted displaced residents.
