A 4-year-old child died after receiving a gunshot wound to the head early Saturday in Lewiston.
Lewiston police received a 911 call at 4:55 a.m. from an apartment at 93 Pierce St., according to a statement from Maine State Police Lt. Aaron M. Turcotte.
Police, fire and ambulance crews responded, and the child was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where the child was pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m.
The state medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy. The Department of Health and Human Services was notified, which is standard protocol in cases involving the death of a child in a household.
The final ruling on cause and manner of death is pending, said Turcotte.
